How is an Ear Damaged?

Changes and damage to hair cells and nerves in the inner ear happen after being exposed to very loud noise for an extended period. These cells are very important to the ear - if the music is quieter than 70dBs these hair cells make it clearer for the brain to understand any soft background noise and vibrations.  Damage to hearing can range from dulled hearing and difficulty in understanding speech to ringing noises in your ear (also known as Tinnitus) or the feeling that they are clogged with water but you can't get it out.  These effects may go away, but some hair cells are permanently damaged therefore hearing loss may not show up until many years later.
